Capture the personality, emotion and character of a person in that moment. The power of a beautiful portrait lies in its ability to convey a story, evoke emotions, and provide a glimpse into the soul of the person being photographed.
As a photographer I always feel very privileged to be invited into your lives for a short period of time so I can find out more about the person or animal and take a photograph that captures the essence of who they are.
Connection between photographer and subject
One of the fundamental aspects of portrait photography is the connection between the photographer and the subject. Establishing trust and rapport is crucial to create a relaxed atmosphere, allowing the subject to express themselves authentically. This connection results in more natural and captivating portraits, as I can capture genuine emotions rather than forced expressions.
Lighting and mood
Lighting plays a pivotal role in portrait photography, influencing the mood and overall aesthetic of the image. Whether using natural light or artificial sources, I understand how to manipulate light to flatter the subject and enhance the desired atmosphere. Soft, diffused light is often preferred for its ability to minimize harsh shadows and highlight the subject's features in a flattering manner.
Composition
Composition is another key element in creating compelling portraits. I will consider framing, posing, and background elements to complement the subject and convey the intended message.
Location
The choice of location can significantly impact the outcome of a portrait session. Outdoor settings with natural backdrops provide a diverse and visually appealing canvas, while home or office environments offer greater control over lighting conditions.
Using creative vision and an understanding of the subject's personality, guides the decision-making process when selecting the most suitable location for a portrait shoot. I work in Sussex and the surrounding area.
Editing and post-shoot
In the digital age, post-processing has become an integral part of portrait photography. I take time editing each image and fine-tuning colour, contrast and sharpness, to ensure the final image is as perfect as I can make it without losing the authenticity of the portrait.
Individual or group shots
Portrait photography extends beyond capturing individuals; it also includes family portraits, couple sessions, and even pet portraits. Each category comes with its own set of challenges and opportunities, requiring me to adapt to suit the dynamics and relationships involved. Family portraits, for example, aim to showcase the bond and connection between family members, while couple sessions focus on the unique chemistry shared between partners.
